  1. There is no record of any hedge school being in the village of Castleplunkett, but there were two in the neighborhood during the period from about 1850 to 1870. The hedge school continued for a short number of years after the national school was established in Castleplunkett, about the year 1865.
    One hedge school was taught by a master named Michael (Micky)
    Shanagher at a place called Bohernasup (bóthar na Sup) about a mile south from Castleplunkett. This school was held in a disused cabin during the bad weather and outside the cabin on fine days. The squared trunk of a tree stretched along by the cabin wall, outside, was the only seating accommodation and the pupils wrote resting the copy-books on their knees. Each had a quill pen made from the strong wing feather of a goose, and a bottle of ink attached by a cord to the front of the coat, jacket or smock as the case
