  1. Castleplunkett is the name of my native village. It got its name from a noble family named Plunkett who owned a large farm of land in the vicinity of the village. At that time Castleplunkett was a very straggling village. The houses were more numerous than now. They were all thatched. The majority of the people had no land only one small garden and had to earn a living by working for the gentlemen farmers of the neighbourhood. The wages was very small. One shilling a day was considered good pay for a man. At that time people did not use tea. Potatoes and stirabout were the chief foods of the poor. Long ago there was a great cattle and sheep fair held in Castle-
