  1. A Local Song

The night was still and the battle ended

    I
The night was still and the battle ended.
The moon shone bright o'er Sackville Street,
I stood alone where brave men perished,
Their souls were gone their God to meet.
    II
The first I met was a dying rebel,
As he lay low those words he said,
"God bless my home on the Wicklow mountains
God bless the cause for which I have bled."
    III
The next I met was a fair haired cailín
She was kneeling down by her true-love's side.
