  1. About two miles from Boyle, on the Felton road, there was a hedge-school. It was held on the edge of a river, in a large field, which was the property of Mr. Tyrann. The children gathered at the side of the river, and they had three teachers, namely Mr. O'Gara, Mr. Flanagan, and Mr. O'Flaherty. The subjects taught were - Irish, History and Catechism.
    The children at that time, never used pens or ink, like we have, as quills were used for pens, and the juice of red berries was used for ink. Paper
