  1. In the year 1839 there was a terrible storm in January and it was called the night of the big wind. It happened in the night time and when a big windstorm comes people refer to it yet and say "that is as bad as the night of the big wind". There were houses blown down and people were terribly frightened. They took the cattle out of the sheds for fear they would be blown down on them. It blew the hay and corn out of the haggards and all that was to be seen of it in the next morning was what was stuck among the bushes and hedges.
