  1. A great giant called Manover came from Norway long ago to fight Fionn Mac Cool. He had beaten every giant he heard tell of so now he decided to beat Fionn.
    When Fionn heard that he was coming he did not know what to do as he was afraid he would be beaten His wife at once thought of a trick. She told him to lie down in a big cradle which she had. "Now" says she "lie quiet and when the giant comes I'll say Fionn is not at home at all today"
    When Manover arrived, the first thing he did was to change the house from front to back as the wind was on the door. Then he went in and asked who was in the cradle and Fionn's wife said it was her son. Manover put his hand down to see what the baby was like and Fionn bit off his finger.
    Manover then asked for something to eat but Fionn's wife said she had no meat so she sent him to
