“There used to be a fair in Kilmeague long ago.”
There used to be a fair in Kilmeague, long ago. In the penal days the Catholics were supposed to pay tithes to the Protestants. When some poor people could not pay, their cow was taken and sold in the fair. This fair was called the "cant" of Kilmeague and ever since the place where the fair used to be is called the "Cant of Kilmeague". The money got for the cow was given to the minister. - Collector
