    to sow potatoes. The spades are bought ready-made in the shop. Blacksmiths used to make a spade called a "faic". There was a piece of wood stuck down at the side for the person to put his foot on. When the person was getting the spade made at the forge he would tell the blacksmith whether he was left-footed or right-footed and the blacksmith would make the spade accordingly.

    There was an old road going from Hogarty's to Carew's. It was called the Dane's road. There was a ford across the river Slate near where
