The ruling Irish family of the district was O'Sullivan Mór of Cappanacuss.
Tradition has it that the last chief went to Béal na Oeann (A peak in Dunkerron Mountain) and looked westwards at his property. He observed only "four smokes" in all the district before he went to Dublin to sell his property.
In Dublin he met Bland and they drank together at the same hotel. That night they played cards and Bland won all O'Sullivan's money. O'Sullivan then gambled his property and lost it. Bland was landlord of district round Sneem prior to Warden to whom he sold his property.
