    The birds were warbling, their notes were charming,
    The sun was warm and very bright.

    I heard a wailing of lamentation,
    Poor Dan complaining to old Diarmáin,
    How he was forsaken by lovely Katie,
    And she was going out lately to Laca Bán.

    To hear him calling, he was crying and bawling,
    The tears were falling down from his eyes.
