- I have no churn at home but I have been told about churns. The average sized churn was about four feet high. The diameter of its base was about twenty one inches. Its top had a diameter of one foot. The sides are round, thus. The various parts are the barrel, which contains the cream, the churn dash and the cove. In summer, butter was as a rule made twice per week. In winter it was made once per week. As a rule women used to do the churning. Frequently the men used assist.
