  1. Tops ("dancers") were made from thread spools as follows. First, the hole in the spool was plugged with a piece of timber. Then, by means of a breakfast or dinner knife, the spool was reduced to the shape of a cone, thus [illustration]. Next a nail with a blunt point was inserted at the tapering end of the spool, thus [illustration]. About a quarter inch of this nail was exposed so as to form the axis on which the top would spin.
