  1. Whip making - Whips were made of strips of tanned horse hide, as follows. A piece of tanned horse hide about one inch wide and three feet long was obtained and cut into lengths about one eight of an inch wide. The lengths were not cut off the piece of hide but were left joined together at one end (A) thus. The lengths were now interwoven from A to B and attached to a hazel whip staff or crop about two and a half feet long.
