  1. Nails for horse shoes only. Up to fifty years ago nails were made by a blacksmith from rod iron, the cross section of which was three quarters of an inch square. This was reddened and hammered to draw it out to the desired length and thickness. One end of the piece was hammered to point it. When red the other end was struck lightly with the hammer to form the head.
