  1. Ned McCaffery of Ballinagall was promised a bag of indian meal with two cwts in it if he carried it from Monaghan to his own home which was about a mile from town. He did carry it and got the meal.

  2. My Grandfather went to a school up the old Ballybay road. The spot is there yet and there are fir trees growing in it and that is at my Uncle's lane. When they would be getting their holidays if the master went out they would not let him in for a half an hour. They used a slate and a slate pencil and there was a hole at the side of the slate and there was a string put through the hole and it hung round their neck.
The name of the master was Caldwell.
