- Flax was grown on almost every farm about fifty years ago. It was scutched in their homes. Often when a man needed money to pay rent the neighbours went to his house and scutched his flax so that he could sell it and get money. The flax was scutched by a stalk and handle. Each scutched handful was called a streak, and about - four of these streaks made a stone weight.
