    oaten meal pinch of salt a cup of lukewarm water. They first mixed the salt through the meal. Then added the water and mixed it together. Then they let it set and put it before the fire on a bread stick to bake.
    When they would have no meal, cabbage, milk, or potatoes they would go out and put up a red flag before the train and stop it. Then they would go around among the passengers and make a collection to buy bread.
    At Christmas if they had a loaf of bread and tea they would think they had a feast.
