  1. Long ago the oldest National school in our district was held at Drumcatton. Some times the teaching was held in the farmers houses, and when summer time came, the teaching was held outside in the open air. Some of the schools are still in the same place. The first master that taught in Magoney school was Mr Hill it was a very small school at that time and in the Winter time the children used to take either a lump of coal or a turf or sticks every morning the big children would have to gather the sticks, some of the teachers were strangers, these are the names, Mr Hill and Mr Hall and Mr Mahon. Long ago the teachers were getting £40..0S..0D every year. They did not know any Irish at that time, they had some books for themselves but the children had none, they used to write with chalks and slates. They also had a blackboard to write on. The teachers that taught in Magoney School, were against the Irish although they were Catholics. Mr Hall lived in Donaghmoyne
