- There was an old school near Ballyragget There was a hedge schoolmaster teaching in this school. These schools were beside the hedges. The name of the schoolmaster was Brenan. In these schools the people used to learn Irish and English and Latin. It was mostly all Irish they used to learn.

- There was a hedge school in Tim Murphys field my grandfather went to it Thomas Hayden taught in the Hedge school The school lasted only for a few years. It was in a barn they had it. The had to do sums on slates and wright on copies They had no blackboards. There was about fifty boys going to the hedge school. They only had to pay a penny a week. Every(continues on next page)
