  1. Bread in olden times was made from barm which was got from malt and hops. Sometimes it was made from potatoes. It was baked in an oven by the bakers and, in a bake pot or on a griddle in the homes.
    The bakers had to devote one day each week to making the barm. They made enough at a time to do them for a week. The barm bread was mixed with water and the potato bread was mixed with buttermilk.
