There was once an old man dwelling in a house and he was half blind. Every night people used to come in and play cards in his house in which there were some rats. One night a joker brought in a dead rat and put it between two dishes on the dresser. They were playing cards for a while and someone said: "There is a rat" on the dresser". A hush came over the house in case any one would disturb the "dead rat". The old man got a stick and when he came within stricking place he aimed a mighty stroke and killed the "dead rat", and broke every thing on the dresser. He said it was worth it all because that rat was the mother of all the rats in the house.
