  2. The famine in 1847 effected the inhabitants of this district badly.
    There was a large population in this district then but the majority died of hunger.
    The blight came on the potatoes when they were growing and they all failed.
    The people had nothing to sow the following year but the English sent a free grant of potatoes seed to them.
    Beside this small quantity of potatoes they had turnips.
