  1. Long ago the fairs were different to nowadays. Each month a fair was held in the principal towns in the same way as we have now but there were five extra fairs held on special dates throughout the year. These were called "old fairs." The "old fairs" of Carrickmacross were held in March, May, August and September.
    In the villages there were only four fairs held each year. In the village of Ballytrain the fairs were held on New Year's Day Patrick's Day, Lammas Day and the 1st of November. These fairs are not held nowadays. A fair is held every month in Ballybay. There is a special
