One wintry day a farmer was fixing slates on his house after a heavy windstorm. It was a large building and he was working earnestly to get it finished before night time.
The priest of that parish was ill for a long time and his doctor advised him to take more exercise and to go for a fairly long walk every day. This evening he was out walking and he noticed the man working on the roof of the house. The priest was a proud man and thought he was very clever. He went over to the man and said "it is very easy putting slates on a house only for the lathing." The farmer replied scornfully "it is very easy saying Mass only for the Latin."
