  1. Long ago in the time of the fairies when mothers would be going outside if there was nobody in the house behind them they would put the tongs across the cradle and then the fairies could not touch the child. There was a woman one time who went out one day and forgot to put the tongs across the cradle. When she came back in her child was gone. There was a little deformed fairy child lying in the cradle in its place. It yelled and cried day and night and the mother did not know what to do about her own child. Some days after a little fairy woman came in, and asked her what happened her. She told her story to the fairy and the fairy told her that she lived at the foot of her garden and she would help her to get back her child. She gave her a magic wand and told her to go to a certain fort on a certain night at twelve o'clock and to take the fairy child with her and she would see her
