  1. There were in olden times many notable men in my district, but in recent years the numbers have decreased gradually. These men were strong, sturdy and healthy. The chief families of this class were the McCabes and the Connollys. They both came from Tattygare, Castleblayney.
    Another famous man for strength (also from Tattygare) was a certain James Boylan known locally as "Captain Boylan". Although a very light man, he could carry a bag containing eighteen stones of grain on his back up a ladder.
    A certain man named Neil McMahon was one of the swiftist men in the vicinity. He used to follow hares and rabbits for hours and sometimes for a whole day. He lived in the townland of Calna, Castleblayney. He could run as far as six or seven miles in an
