  1. Once upon a time three men were lodging in a farmer's house for the night. Early next morning they arose and went into the farmyard.
    The first man stole a horse and ran away. The second man store a cow and the third man took a cart. So the three men journeyed home-wards. Scarcely had they gone a mile when they met a Civic Guard.
    The Guard questioned the first man concerning the horse and he said he had it since it was a foal.
    The second man was next to be questioned about his cow, and he said he had it since it was a calf.
    The third man was next on turn, and when he saw how easy the other men got off, he wanted to have a good excuse also. The Guard says to
