  1. The schools held in this district during the penal days were called hedge schools. There was one held, in a field longside the road, at Lalisheen. It was held there until Kilbonane National School was built. The subjects that were taught there were Irish and Latin.The pupils wrote on slates with slate-pencils and on paper with quills. They had books and spoke Irish. There were no benches or stools. Some teachers went from house to house, and farmers paid them to teach their families. The teachers were very good scholars, and were very much respected by the people.

  2. In the parish of Listry there existed what was known as a hedge school. The name of this particular school is unknown, since in those times it was forbidden by law to coduct any kind of institution for teaching. It is well know, however, that
