- Brid na Sean Aimsire(1) Long ago people ate three meals each day. The meals were breakfast, dinner and supper. People always worked for about two hours every morning before breakfast. Breakfast was eaten at about nine o'clock. Potatoes were the principal food, of the people long ago. They were eaten at the breakfast and dinner and sometimes for supper. The potatoes were boiled and then the water was drained away by putting them into a shallow basket called a 'birdeog'. The table was usually near the wall but during a meal it was put in the middle of the floor. When the meal was finished it was put back again. People drank thick milk with potatoes. Bread and milk or porridge was eaten for supper. The bread was either meal bread or potato cake, called stampy. Stampy was made by grating potatoes and mixing them with flour. The mixture was wet with water or milk and was baked in a griddle or oven. Another kind of bread(continues on next page)
