  1. Brennan had property bordering on MacCarty's property.
    The MacCartys of Headfort.
    A dispute arose between Brennan and McCarthy.
    Brennan challenged MacCarty to a duel but the latter refused to fight. He told his wife (an O'Connell of Derrynane) of the affair when he went home. "You coward" she said "take him up or we are shamed for ever"
    He was persuaded to fight and he chose Richard O'Leary as his seconds.
    The duel was fought at Lissivigeen.
    After the fight an old follower of MacCarty's nicknamed Moscow was seen to be carrying something inside his coat. He was asked what he had hidden
    His reply was
    "Dá dtuitheadh MacCarthaig
    Do thuitfeadh Braonann"
