    the hens. One day, when a young fellow by the name of Johnny Connell, was threshing a sheaf, a hen ran under the flail, and got killed, and the teacher got very angry, on seeing the hen killed. (She does not remember what fees were paid him).
    But those teachers who had not fixed habitations used to go with the scholars for a couple of nights in turn.
    The parents used to cut and draw the turf, and sow and dig the garden for those teachers who had little cabins in return for the teaching of their children. Then at Christmas they used to give them a few shillings and perhaps a few shillings at other times of the year, but these were rare occaions.
