- Along time ago there was a poor travelling man, and his name was Tom the Whiskers. He was very witty and would sometimes make rhymes where he would not get fair treatment. He travelled through all Kerry, and received great kindness. He then travelled to other counties where he did not get on so well.
He was one time travelling the County Wicklow, where he received bad treatment and made this rhyme.
"Sweet vale of Avoca,
Though Moore called thee sweet,
Poor Tom had to travel twenty miles on bare feet;
And sleep out all night without blanket or sheet,
Then I dont give a dam, where the bright waters meet." - Collector
