  1. There once lived a man near Killarney who turned souper in the Penal Days. His name was Barry Roche. He later became very poor, and had to travel from place to place, going into houses, and schools, for a few pence to help him.
One day he went into Kilcummin school where his friend Mr Mc.Kay was teaching, and asked him for help in this way.
"Its here I stand, without reproach
    Your humble servant Barry Roche".
    Mr Mc.Kay replied -
"O Barry Roche, you dirty glutton, You sold your soul for a leg of mutton".
I heard this story from an old ages pensioner, names Dan Crowley, "[?] Gneevguilla".
