  1. In olden times in our district a number of poor people resorted the neighbourhood. They slept near the fire in the kitchen in a bed made of hay or straw and whatever clothes they could find. In most cases the people were very kind to them and made them aas comfortable as they possibly could.
In our neighbourhood a man named Sullivan Foley went around gathering eggs, and said prayers for the people in return. He wore a long white whisker. A woman named Mary Barrett went around also, and stayed about half an hour praying for those who assisted her. Jer the Rigger and his sister Fan went around bare footed and Free Mary, and Jack the Fish selling Almanacs and Fish. When he came near a house it was his custom to scream out "Fresh alive (and) with their eyes open". Bill the sheep went along the road with five or six sheep. Mary Moylan and her daughter Mary were regular visitors.
