There is no tradition of reverence for the place. This hole at the back of the creamery is called "Poll a' thóirt". It means "of the thirst". Anything thrown in there is swallowed up. It should really be "Poll a' tarta" (The hole of the thirst). So says Tom Brosnan (born 1846) of Ballynahinch. Others said it was "Poll a' tho-irk, but they were young persons. However, the name Poll a' tho-irk (Poll a’ tSúghraich) is universal. Perhaps the older people disliked the name for some reasons.
