    perceived the "guard" in the corner and were frightened as they had not seen Parnell before and did not know it was he. He told them to leave at once as Parnell had left in the early hours of the morning and had fled somewhere. The soldiers left discouraged.
    Parnell stayed that night in the house and as morning dawned he went to the island where a boat had been to take him across the Shannon to Co. Clare, where he had no contact with the soldiers.
