it was taken down by the grandfather of a local smith- John Tuoney at Maglax.
"Chute Hall" (proper name Tullygarron) was held by a branch of the McElligott family - it came to the Chutes by marriage- the Chutes used to keep priests in the Penal Times when a price was on their heads.
Three or four families- descendants of the McElligotts are still in the parish. There were McElligotts from Ballymacelligott in William's army and in James' army at the Battle of the Boyne to insure that whatever side won they would be in the ascendency.
There are remains of an old Church in Kilguane; a few miles from the old castles of the McElligotts. The foundations are still there. There is a tradition about the closing of this church. Two brothers of the McElligotts family, who were the rulers of the parish at that time, had a row over the burial of a child belonging to one of them, and there was a pitched battle in the church grounds and blood was spilled and the church was closed in consequence of this.
