  1. Half a mile from the village of Castlegregory there was hedge school which was called Bothan na scoile. It was situated in a field belonging to Mr. T. Courtney, and the school was taught by Mr. J. Hoare of Maherabeg, Castlegregory. It was taught in a cabin, and near the cabin was a cave where pupils, and teachers escaped when they saw the soldiers coming. The cave was forgotten by the present generation until Mr. Courtney was ploughing the fields about twenty years ago when the roof of the cave collapsed. Then
