  1. There was once a man whose wife died and he married again. He had an only son called Séan. He was very fond of Séan and he said to his second wife that he would be very grateful to her if she would take good care of Séan and feed him with wholesome food. She did not like to displease her husband and yet she wanted to be cruel to the child. Each evening she got a flag and plastered wet oaten - meal on the outside of it. This appeared to her husband a right oat - cake. The child
