  1. The last saturday in shrove is known locally as "Snapping Saturday" because people are usually asked in marriage on that day.
    Shrove Sunday is called "Donas Smut" because some people are downhearted when they were not asked in marriage. The following tuesday is called "Salting Tuesday" on account of people throwing salt on people who ought to be married to keep them from getting "stale" for the next year.
