- The Book of Ballymote was written in the sixteenth century.
It contains an account of the golden age of Ireland, the Saints who left Ireland to spread the faith in other countries, old Irish books such as the book of Rights and the book of Kells.
It also contains meanings of place-names all over Ireland.
The most important historical events are included especially an account of the invasions and the evil wrought by the Danes, old stories and legends are told throughout the book.
It does not contain much local history.
It was Solomon O Droma and Máighnús Ó Duigneaín who collected the information and gave it to writers who wrote it into a book called the Book of Ballymote.
This book is very valuable.
