  1. Many years ago there lived in this district an old man named Thady McGowan. He lived in a mud cabin in a remote place. He was poor and his only means of living was by begging. Each day he went around from house to house begging potatoes or anything that the good neighbours would give him. At that time there lived a crowd of young men in this locality who were up to every mischief and who loved to play tricks on everyone. One night they all met and made a plan to play a trick on Thady. That night they played a fine trick on him and this is how they did it.
    When he came to that last house in the village the woman of the house told him to come up to the fire. He was soon sitting by the turf fire enjoying his bowl
