  1. In the olden days, there were two kinds of Landlords the absentee and the residential. In choosing between the two kinds of any the residential one was the best. The absentee Landlord left all the management of his estates to his agents or understrappers, and the result of this was that the unfortunate tenant was trampled upon. In this half-parish of Ballymote, we had the residential Landlord named Jemmet Duke of Newpark. The Dukes originated from the farming class and their religion at this period gave them privileges which were not enjoyed by their fellow Catholics. The Dukes came into
