one or two panes of glass. Some houses were without any windows but had the door open to let in the light.
The floors in the old houses were made of daub and were very wet and unhealthy. Half-doors were very common on the houses long ago and are still seen on some houses in the district. These doors were used to keep out hens and ducks and at the same time to let in light.
Turf and sticks and sometimes colm were used for fire. The houses were lighted up with rush candles. These candles were made by taking the skin off the rushes and dipping them in grease.
