- Long ago the people were so strong and hardy that they were out on the ridge at 5:30 O Clock in the morning and would not take a bit until about nine O Clock. The first meal consisted of a pot of good laughing potatoes and a tin saucepan of buttermilk. The second meal consisted of a roasted herring and on it was oaten meal boiled with water and made it into a thin gruel. This was the dinner. There was no other meal until work was finished then more potatoes and buttermilk. A lot of milk was drank these times and much butter was eaten. The table was a wooden stool with four legs. This was placed on the middle of the floor, and the potatoes when boiled were strained out on a basket and thrown in on the centre of the table. The family sat around this stool and eat the potatoes with buttermilk or sometimes pepper and salt.
