- This Cairn is situated in the townland of Heapstown about a hundred yards from the road that runs from Riverstown to Boyle. The local tradition is that it was raised over the chieftains who were killed at the Battle of Moytura and that it was all raised in one night. It is said that every soldier brought a stone in honour of his leaders. Others say it was raised by the Milesians and the reason that is given is, that there are similar Cairns on the banks of the Boyne where the Milesians settled and in Spain where the Milesians came from. There is a stone with Ogham writing on it erected outside Annagh School. This stone was taken from Heapstown Cairn. People have often taken stones from the Cairn to build houses. But no matter how much stones were taken away it always seemed to be the same size. Another remarkable fact is that(continues on next page)
