In due course Tom fell in love with the rich man's daughter and they were to be married but before the marriage the girl's father sent his agent to Ireland to see the "boy's" farm.
When the agent reached Tom's farm, he discovered that the house was only a small cabin. Inside the kitchen door there were two goats tied. An old man sat in the corner and when he had his dinner ready he took a basket full of potatoes on his knees. That was his table. When he had finished eating he went down to where the goats were tied a took a wisp from them to clean his hands and lips. Outside the door there was a dirty pool of water in which geese and ducks were swimming. When the agent had seen all that was to be seen he returned to his master.
