A Song
“This is a song which was composed by a man”
This is a song which was composed by a man named Fitzwilliams who went to America when he was about twenty years of age. He is not living now. I got the information from Peter McDonagh of Lackagh, Parish of Ballyadare and Barony of Couan He is a farmer and is about sixty years of age.I was born in dear old Ireland
And lived there twenty years, since reason dawned
I have always kindly felt its hopes and fears
Tho far away, across the sea, in spirit still I roam
Around the hills and valleys
Of my dear native home.I never can forget the day that I left Riverstown
Or can I ere' forget the boys that with me did go down
To Sligo town that lies so snug
At the food of KnocknaneaOld Irishmen, you have the brightest dressed land on earth
And free the dear land of your birth
Unite the Orange and the Green, unfurl it right away
Let it float on high beneath your native sky
On the top of KnocknaneaI love my dear adopted land
I love it as my life
I love it dearly as I love my children and my wife(continues on next page)- Informant
