  1. Until about sixty years ago the people of Ireland had to provide their own light They had no oil lamps or no light of any kind except the "rush candles" made by themselves. Each household made bundles of rush-candles at a time and used them as required.
    The man or woman of the house brought in a bundle of rushes. He then pulled each rush to a small strip from one end to the other.
    He treated each of the rushes in the same way
