  1. Long ago the people used to make candles of tallow and rushes. They gathered a quantity of rushes and peeled them. They tied every two together and left them to dry. Then they melted some tallow in a pan and dipped the dried rushes into it and left them to dry.
    When dry they dipped them in again. They did this several times until the candles were thick enough.
